Ikpeba Explains Why Hakimi Beat Osimhen to 2025 CAF African Player of the Year Award

Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba has defended the decision to crown Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi as the 2025 CAF African Player of the Year ahead of Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen.

Hakimi, who plays as a right back for Paris Saint Germain, enjoyed an outstanding season in Europe. The 27 year old won the UEFA Champions League, the French Ligue 1 title and every major domestic trophy with PSG, missing out only on the FIFA Club World Cup.

His remarkable achievements saw him finish ahead of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah to claim Africa’s most prestigious individual football award.

Osimhen also had an impressive campaign. He scored 37 goals and provided eight assists in 41 matches for Galatasaray, helping the Turkish club secure a domestic double. Despite this performance, Ikpeba believes Hakimi’s accomplishments were too significant to ignore.

Speaking on the outcome, Ikpeba acknowledged that Nigerian fans may feel disappointed but insisted that the Moroccan full back deserved to win.

He said, “We are disappointed we are not going to the World Cup, but Victor has been outstanding with his passion and determination when he plays for the national team with no limits.

For the three players, I think Hakimi has been brilliant. He won the Ligue 1, the Champions League, and he won everything with PSG. For the beauty of football, he is a deserving winner.”

Hakimi’s triumph places him among the elite recipients of the CAF Player of the Year Award and further strengthens his status as one of the best full backs in world football.
