In a shocking incident that has left the nation in grief, Army jawan Jigneshbhai Chaudhary from Vadgam, Banaskantha, was stabbed to death by a coach attendant while traveling home on leave.
Jigneshbhai, a decorated soldier who served in the Indian Army for 12 years, had just completed his duty in Udhampur, Jammu, and boarded the Jammu Tawi Sabarmati Express from Ferozepur Cantt on Sunday, eager to reunite with his family.
According to reports, the tragic confrontation began over a seemingly minor issue. An argument broke out between Jigneshbhai and the train’s coach attendant, Zubair Memon, reportedly over a request for a bed sheet. What started as a verbal spat escalated into a fatal attack. Later that night, after the train had departed, Memon allegedly returned armed with a knife, attacked the soldier inside the coach, and stabbed him to death.
The incident prompted immediate action from authorities. The GRP and RPF detained the accused, and Jigneshbhai’s body was sent to PBM Hospital in Bikaner for post-mortem examination. By Wednesday morning, his mortal remains reached Chhapi, where a grand funeral procession was held. Thousands of mourners lined the streets, waving the Tricolour, chanting patriotic slogans, and paying tribute to the fallen soldier.
The soldier’s family has demanded the harshest punishment for the accused, insisting that a thorough investigation be carried out to identify and apprehend anyone else involved. Jigneshbhai’s brother, Jethabhai Chaudhary, expressed his anguish, saying, “My brother came home on leave and was killed by a deranged person on a train. We demand justice from the Prime Minister and Home Minister. Bring the accused to Gujarat and hang him.”
Another relative, Harjibhai Chaudhary, raised broader concerns about passenger safety, stating, “If an army man is not safe in an AC coach, what about ordinary passengers? We demand that everyone linked to this murder be caught immediately.”
This tragic incident has not only shaken the local community but has also sparked outrage nationwide. It underscores the dangers faced by even disciplined soldiers while performing their duties and traveling, and it has reignited calls for stricter security measures on trains and public transportation.
