Former Chief of Staff to Obasanjo, Major General Abdullahi Adangba Muhammed, Dies at 86

Nigeria has lost another prominent figure in its political and security history. Major General Abdullahi Adangba Muhammed (rtd), a respected military officer and former Chief of Staff to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has passed away at the age of 86.

According to reports, the retired general died peacefully at his residence in Kaduna on Wednesday morning. His death marks the end of an era for one of the nation’s most experienced and strategic minds in governance and security management.

Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, Major General Muhammed’s career in the Nigerian Army spanned decades of dedicated service. Known for his brilliance, integrity, and calm disposition, he earned a reputation as one of the most disciplined and effective officers of his generation.

Adangba Muhammed first came to national prominence when he was appointed Military Governor of the old Benue Plateau State between 1975 and February 1976 during the regime of General Murtala Mohammed. During his short tenure, he was known for promoting discipline, transparency, and infrastructural development across the state.

Following his time as governor, he went on to play a pivotal role in the establishment of Nigeria’s intelligence architecture. Between 1976 and 1979, he founded the National Security Organization (NSO), which later became known as the Department of State Services (DSS). His leadership and foresight in building an effective national security framework remain one of his most enduring legacies.

General Abdullahi Muhammed’s influence extended far beyond the military. He served as National Security Adviser to Head of State General Abdusalami Abubakar from 1998 to 1999, a critical period in Nigeria’s history that oversaw the country’s transition from military rule to democratic governance.

Following the return to democracy, he was appointed Chief of Staff to President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, a role he held until 2007. His tenure was characterized by diligence, professionalism, and loyalty. He continued in the same position under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua until his retirement in 2008, marking nearly a decade of service at the highest level of government.

During this period, General Muhammed played a crucial behind-the-scenes role in maintaining coordination between the Presidency and various arms of government. His deep understanding of Nigeria’s political landscape and security dynamics made him an invaluable asset in the Obasanjo administration and beyond.

Often described by colleagues as intelligent, humble, and fiercely patriotic, General Abdullahi Adangba Muhammed was known for his quiet but firm leadership style. Although he preferred to operate away from the spotlight, his influence was felt in every sphere of government where he served.

He was a bridge between the military and civilian authorities, earning the respect of politicians, civil servants, and fellow officers alike. His contributions to national security, particularly in intelligence gathering and policy formulation, helped stabilize Nigeria during some of its most challenging periods.

As Nigeria reflects on his passing, many describe him as a man of integrity whose lifetime of service left an indelible mark on the nation. His work in establishing the structures that became the DSS remains one of the cornerstones of Nigeria’s security framework today.

General Abdullahi Adangba Muhammed’s death is a significant loss to Nigeria’s military and political community. He is remembered not just as a soldier and statesman, but as a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of his country.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon by the family.
