A fire outbreak on Wednesday morning destroyed property worth millions of naira at a diaper-producing factory in Nnewichi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m., catching many residents by surprise as they were still asleep when the fire started.
The Chief Fire Officer of the Anambra State Fire Service, Mr Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Onitsha. He stated that firefighters responded promptly, preventing the blaze from spreading to an adjoining gas plant and other nearby structures.
Chiketa said that although some buildings within the factory premises were affected, the fire was eventually brought under control. No casualties were recorded.
According to him, preliminary findings suggest that the fire was triggered by a suspected explosion within the company.
An eyewitness, Obinna Okoye, commended the swift intervention of firefighters, noting that their timely response helped prevent a larger disaster in the community.
Authorities say further investigations into the explosion and the full extent of damage are ongoing.
