A young woman identified as Angela Ogah is currently battling for her life following an alleged acid attack in the Amufi community of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The suspect, believed to be her boyfriend Timothy Gilbert, has reportedly gone into hiding since the incident occurred.
According to her lawyer, John Izegaegbe, the attack took place over the weekend and left Ogah with severe injuries. Izegaegbe confirmed on Monday that a formal petition has been filed with the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, requesting immediate intervention to ensure the arrest of the suspect.
Ogah is receiving treatment at a private hospital, where medical personnel are working to stabilise her condition. Journalists who visited the facility reported that she was unable to speak, with hospital staff focusing their efforts on her recovery and monitoring her response to treatment.
Izegaegbe expressed deep concern over the situation, calling on security agencies to intensify their search for Gilbert. He emphasised that the victim’s condition underscores the urgency of bringing the suspect to justice.
“We want the suspect arrested as quickly as possible. The victim is in unbearable pain. She could barely talk when journalists visited her. Gilbert fled after attacking her with a substance suspected to be acid. We are calling on the authorities to ensure he is tracked down without delay,” he said.
Residents of the Amufi area have expressed shock over the incident, describing it as deeply troubling. Some community members said the couple had been seen together earlier in the week, with no visible signs of conflict, making the alleged attack even more unexpected.
Police authorities have acknowledged receipt of the petition and are expected to provide updates as investigations continue. The manhunt for the suspect is underway, with security operatives gathering information that may assist in his arrest.
The case has sparked discussions on domestic violence and personal safety within the community, with many calling for stronger preventive measures and quicker responses to incidents involving intimate partner violence.
