Authorities in Yobe State are on high alert following the escape of a condemned inmate from the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum.
The fugitive, identified as Abba Hassan, is from Maiduguri, Borno State, and was awaiting execution after being convicted and sentenced to death for undisclosed crimes.
According to a statement released by the Yobe State Police Command on Saturday, November 1, 2025, the escape took place on October 31, 2025.
Police spokesperson SP Dungus Abdulkarim confirmed the incident in an official notice, saying that security agencies have since launched a coordinated manhunt to locate and rearrest the escapee.
“People should not try to confront or arrest him on their own. For your safety, report to the nearest police station or correctional centre,” SP Abdulkarim cautioned.
He further appealed to residents of Yobe State and neighboring areas including Borno, Bauchi, and Gombe States to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or persons that may help in recapturing the fugitive.
The police also released an emergency contact number 08038452982 for citizens who may have credible information on the whereabouts of the escaped inmate.
SP Abdulkarim expressed appreciation to members of the public for their continued support and cooperation, assuring that the police are working in collaboration with correctional authorities and other security agencies to bring Hassan back into custody as soon as possible.
He emphasized that the security of lives and property remains a top priority for the command, adding that measures have been strengthened across correctional facilities and border routes within the state to prevent similar incidents.
This development comes amid growing concerns over prison security across the country, with several escape cases reported in recent years due to jailbreaks, attacks, or internal lapses within correctional facilities.
The Yobe Police Command urged residents to remain calm but alert, and to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and safety across the state.
