A food outlet in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, was temporarily shut down on Monday morning after a customer suddenly collapsed and died while waiting for his meal. The unexpected incident caused shock among patrons and staff, prompting an immediate response from emergency services and law enforcement.
According to eyewitnesses, the man, whose identity and age have not yet been released, had entered the outlet earlier in the morning and was seated quietly while waiting for his order. Witnesses said he appeared calm and showed no visible signs of distress before he became unresponsive.
One customer told The Chronicle that the man’s posture suddenly changed and he remained unusually still for several moments. When another patron attempted to check on him, it became clear that something was wrong, leading staff to quickly call for emergency assistance.
Paramedics arrived promptly but confirmed that the man had already passed away. His body remained inside the outlet as detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department Homicide Division carried out a preliminary investigation. Officers were seen interviewing staff members, reviewing the scene and assessing the man’s belongings.
As of 9:45 a.m., the food outlet had closed its doors to allow authorities to work, although some customers were still being attended to through a different section of the premises. Police have not yet determined the cause of death and a formal statement is expected once investigations progress.
While officials have not confirmed the exact location, unverified reports circulating on social media suggest that the incident may have occurred at a Chicken Inn branch in the city.
The sudden death has stirred conversations among residents, many of whom expressed sympathy for the man’s family and reflected on the fragility of life. Several community members also voiced concerns about the limited availability of basic emergency response skills among the public, calling for greater awareness and training in CPR and first aid.
Authorities are urging the public to remain patient as investigations continue.
