Tragedy struck in Ekori community, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, as a 26-year-old man, Samuel Samson Udo, was shot dead by suspected cultists during his father’s wake-keeping ceremony.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants, described as drug-influenced and armed cultists, stormed the venue late Friday night and opened fire on attendees, causing panic and chaos in the community.
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Igiri Ewa, said the matter has been reported and that the Commissioner of Police has ordered a discreet investigation to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
Human rights activist and Yakurr community leader, Chief Barr. Okoi Obono-Obla, condemned the attack, warning that continued insecurity in the area could escalate into wider conflict if not urgently addressed.
“Unless urgent steps are taken by security agencies and stakeholders, the situation could escalate into a full-scale conflict,” Obla said.
“For decades, our people have been denied the right leadership. What has been imposed instead is mediocrity marked by confusion, incompetence, and failure.”
Obono-Obla called on security agencies, responsible leaders, and peace-loving citizens to act swiftly to prevent further violence and restore calm in the community.
He further accused political and community leaders of neglecting their responsibilities in maintaining peace and order, saying the region has suffered from “growing social decay caused by unscrupulous politicians, misguided community leaders, and disoriented youths.”
The activist vowed to continue speaking out against injustice and insecurity despite facing criticism and online attacks.
Meanwhile, police authorities have assured residents that efforts are underway to bring the attackers to justice, while calm has reportedly returned to the area.
