Businessman and socialite, Cubana Chiefpriest, has made a notable shift in his position regarding the detention of Indigenous People of Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu, following an extensive phone conversation with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
Cubana Chiefpriest, who had earlier issued a strongly worded public appeal to President Bola Tinubu, accusing the Federal Government of neglecting the concerns of the South East and tying the region’s challenges to Kanu’s continued detention, shared an update on social media revealing that his stance had changed after receiving new information from the Deputy Speaker.
According to the businessman, he spent more than 42 minutes on a group call with Benjamin Kalu, during which the Deputy Speaker briefed him on ongoing efforts surrounding Kanu’s case. He said the update restored confidence that progress was being made behind the scenes, noting that the matter has now reached a stage where the President can take action since it is no longer held up in court.
Cubana Chiefpriest publicly apologised for previously criticising Kalu, expressing regret for doubting his commitment to issues affecting the South East. He described the Deputy Speaker as “an action man” and said the long conversation gave him clearer insight into the steps being taken to secure Kanu’s release.
In his remarks, he also assured President Tinubu that his “votes are secured,” signalling a softer tone toward the administration. He urged the President to give attention to the delegation expected to engage him on the matter, adding that resolving Kanu’s detention would contribute significantly to restoring peace and stability in the South East.
The businessman went on to link the region’s decline in recent years to the prolonged detention of Kanu, stating that the South East has faced setbacks that require urgent intervention. He emphasised that bringing Kanu home would help address longstanding tensions and pave the way for renewed progress.
Cubana Chiefpriest further disclosed that the call enabled him to gain access to visit Kanu soon, confirming that arrangements are being made for an in person meeting. He described the development as a major step forward and said the visit will allow him to hear directly from Kanu and understand the next steps.
The businessman concluded by thanking Benjamin Kalu for his explanations and reaffirming his support for continued dialogue aimed at resolving grievances in the South East. He said the conversation has given him renewed optimism and a better understanding of ongoing government efforts surrounding Kanu’s detention.
