Cross River Authorities Expand Investigation Into Viral Video Showing Elderly Man Forced Into Coffin Over Witchcraft Allegation
Authorities in Bekwarra Local Government Area of Cross River State have intensified their investigation into a viral video that surfaced online on November 19, 2025. The video, which has generated widespread condemnation across the country, appears to show an elderly man being forced into a coffin placed beside a deceased individual, while surrounded by a group of youths who accused him of witchcraft.
In the footage, several individuals speaking the Bekwarra language can be heard addressing the man in raised tones. They reportedly pressured him to admit responsibility for the death of the person in the casket and threatened to bury him alongside the deceased if he failed to comply. The disturbing nature of the video has provoked strong reactions from residents, human rights advocates, and online commentators who have demanded immediate action from security agencies.
The Acting Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Hon. Odama Egbung, released an official statement shortly after the video began circulating. He confirmed that he contacted all security chiefs within the local government immediately to verify the incident and identify those involved. He described the video as deeply troubling and emphasized the need for a swift and thorough investigation.
According to Egbung, early findings have not yet confirmed the specific community, village, or ward where the incident took place. Ward Relations Officers across all political wards have been directed to collaborate with clan heads, traditional rulers, and youth leaders to gather information that may help identify the victim and the individuals seen in the recording. He added that the administration is working closely with security personnel to trace the origins of the video and confirm whether the act occurred within the jurisdiction of Bekwarra Local Government Area.
Forensic investigators have also been tasked with examining the footage to determine its authenticity and establish a timeline of events. Social media accounts that first posted or widely circulated the video have reportedly been flagged for review. Individuals linked to those accounts may be invited by security agencies for questioning as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The Acting Chairman appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from speculation while the authorities continue their work. He encouraged anyone with credible information to come forward and report directly to their Ward Relations Officer or the Divisional Police Headquarters in Abuochiche. He stressed that community cooperation is essential to ensure that justice is served and that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
As the investigation continues, the Cross River State Government and local security formations have reiterated their commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens. They also warned that individuals who engage in mob actions or unfounded accusations of witchcraft will face legal consequences.
