C/R: Tricycle Rider Burns Wife and Six Children to Death, Commits Suicide at Breman Dunkwa

A tragic incident has thrown the community of Breman Dunkwa in the Upper Denkyira East District of the Central Region into mourning after a tricycle rider allegedly set his wife and six children ablaze before hanging himself in a nearby bush.

The suspect, identified as Yaw Afriyie, popularly known as Batman, was said to have committed the horrific act around midnight on Sunday, November 2, 2025, following a domestic dispute with his wife.

According to reports gathered by GHOne TV correspondent Yaw Boagyan, Afriyie had a heated argument with his wife earlier in the evening. The disagreement is believed to have stemmed from long-standing marital issues that escalated that night.

Witnesses said that after the argument, Afriyie asked his wife to check on their sleeping children. Moments later, he reportedly poured petrol on her and the children, locked the doors, and set the house on fire.

Neighbours who heard loud screams and cries for help rushed to the scene but could not rescue the victims as the flames spread quickly, consuming the entire building.

Residents later discovered that Afriyie had fled into a nearby bush. He was found dead hours later, having hanged himself from a tree.

Police officers and local authorities were called to the scene to restore order and investigate the matter. The charred remains of the victims were recovered and transported to the Dunkwa On Offin Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

According to some neighbours, Afriyie was well known in the community as a tricycle rider who often worked late into the night. They expressed deep shock over the incident, describing him as a man who had recently become withdrawn and irritable.

One resident said, “We never imagined he could do something like this. He was always quiet, but lately he looked troubled. This is very sad and painful.”

Community members have called on authorities to provide psychological and social support for families experiencing domestic crises to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Meanwhile, the police have commenced a full-scale investigation to determine the exact cause of the dispute and the events that led to the gruesome deaths. They have also urged members of the public to report early signs of domestic violence to help avert such devastating incidents.

As the community continues to grieve, leaders and residents have expressed concern over the increasing rate of domestic violence and suicide cases in the region. Many have appealed for counseling and awareness programs to educate couples on managing conflict peacefully.

The entire Breman Dunkwa community remains in shock, with residents describing the tragedy as one of the darkest days in the town’s history.
