A young Nigerian woman has taken to social media to lament her painful experience of living in the same compound as her landlord.
The heartbroken tenant, identified on TikTok as @irenetovihoudji, shared an emotional video describing a series of humiliations she and her family suffered at the hands of their landlord. She said the situation had finally become unbearable, forcing her to make plans to move out.
According to the woman, the latest incident occurred when her sister decided to wash clothes near their doorstep instead of the backyard, where water supply was unavailable.
“I told my sister to wash the clothes at our doorstep, not at the backyard, because I did not want the landlord’s problem. There is no running water there, and we fetch water from another compound,” she explained.
She said that while she was away, the landlord confronted her sister, questioning why she was washing in front of the house. Things quickly escalated, and the landlord allegedly threw their freshly washed clothes on the ground.
“When I was not around, he came and started questioning my sister about why she was washing in front of the house. Before we knew it, he threw all our clothes on the bare floor. Can you imagine? Clothes we just washed!” she lamented.
The tenant expressed her frustration, saying she could no longer endure the constant harassment and disrespect.
“I am tired. I cannot continue like this. I am not owing him any rent, yet he treats me and my family like we are squatters. This is too much,” she cried.
Recounting a previous incident, she claimed this was not the first time the landlord had acted aggressively toward her.
“One time, I told him the water in the house was not running. Instead of fixing it, he slapped me. I still kept quiet and stayed because I did not have anywhere else to go,” she said.
The woman revealed that she had informed the landlord of her decision to move out and was seeking a refund of her rent.
“I have told him I am moving out. I want my refund. I just need peace for me and my family. I cannot live like this anymore,” she stated.
Her emotional story has sparked reactions across social media. Many users expressed sympathy for her situation and advised her to leave immediately for her own safety. Others encouraged her to report the matter to local authorities or seek legal help through a tenants’ association.
Some commenters shared similar experiences, describing the challenges that come with living in the same compound as landlords who invade tenants’ privacy or abuse their power.
While the woman says she is already making plans to relocate, many Nigerians online have rallied behind her, calling for compassion and fairness in landlord and tenant relationships.
