CAF Clears Wilfred Ndidi for Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup Playoff vs DRC

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has officially confirmed that Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to play in Sunday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff final against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The clarification was posted on Saturday through the Super Eagles’ official X (formerly Twitter) account, putting an end to concerns about whether Ndidi’s accumulated yellow cards would rule him out of the high-stakes fixture.

According to the statement shared by the team, CAF made it clear that cautions gathered during the World Cup qualification group stage do not carry over into the playoffs.

“CAF has confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to feature for the Super Eagles in Sunday’s playoff clash against DR Congo. Cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifiers do not carry over into the playoffs, only confirmed suspensions apply,” the announcement read.

Ndidi received a yellow card in the sixth minute during Nigeria’s 4–1 victory over Gabon on Thursday, making it his second caution of the qualifiers. This sparked speculation among fans who feared the Leicester City star might miss the playoff encounter.

The confirmation comes as a major boost to Nigeria’s midfield strength as the Super Eagles aim to secure their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With Ndidi cleared, Nigeria will have one of its most experienced midfielders available for selection as they prepare to face a resilient DRC side. His presence could prove pivotal in controlling the tempo of the match and stabilising the team’s defensive structure.
