Nigerian comedian and actor, Samuel Perry, popularly known as Broda Shaggi, has opened up about his challenging upbringing, revealing how his early experiences in a polygamous family and financial struggles shaped his journey to success.
In an emotional interview with With Chude, the comic star recounted life in a home where his father had three wives.
“My dad was married to three women, so at a point my mom wasn’t living with him,” he said, reflecting on the complex family structure. “I know what I experienced living with my stepmom.”
According to him, the situation became even more difficult after his father’s death. He revealed that he often went to school without pocket money, surviving on just a ‘cabin biscuit’ during classes.
Despite the hardships, Broda Shaggi said the experience pushed him to depend on his creativity and talent to support himself and his family.
He also praised his mother for her sacrifices, recalling how she abandoned her business to care for him after a life-threatening accident in secondary school.
“I fell from a three-storey building and spent three months in the hospital,” he said. “My mom stopped her business entirely to care for me.”
Although his mother continues to encourage him to get married, the comedian said his current focus is on personal growth and his relationship with God.
“I am in a very serious relationship with God right now,” he said with a smile.
From the streets of Makoko to becoming one of Nigeria’s most recognised entertainers, Broda Shaggi’s story stands as a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of turning adversity into opportunity.
