Former United States Vice President Dick Cheney has died at the age of 84. His family announced his passing in a statement on Tuesday, confirming reports from several major American news outlets.
According to the statement, Cheney died on Monday, November 3, 2025, from complications related to pneumonia and underlying cardiac and vascular disease. He had a long history of heart problems and underwent a heart transplant in 2012.
Cheney, who served as the forty-sixth Vice President of the United States under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, was a central figure in American politics during one of the most turbulent decades in recent history. He played a major role in shaping the United States’ response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and was a key architect of the subsequent War on Terror.
Before serving as Vice President, Cheney held several prominent positions in government. He was the White House Chief of Staff under President Gerald Ford, a member of the House of Representatives from Wyoming, and later served as Secretary of Defense under President George H. W. Bush, overseeing the Gulf War in 1991.
Known for his strong conservative views and influence within the Republican Party, Cheney was often described as one of the most powerful vice presidents in American history. His approach to national security, surveillance, and foreign policy shaped much of the early twenty-first century political landscape.
In recent years, Cheney had largely withdrawn from public life, focusing on his memoirs and spending time with his family. Despite controversies surrounding the Iraq War and his policies, he remained a respected figure among many conservatives and former government officials.
Tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders across the United States. Former President George W. Bush described him as “a loyal friend, a devoted patriot, and one of the most consequential leaders of our time.”
Cheney is survived by his wife Lynne, their two daughters, Liz and Mary, and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
