The Nigerian Army has confirmed that troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade were ambushed by terrorists in Borno State while returning from a successful operation in the Sambisa Forest area.
In a statement issued by Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the military disclosed that the patrol team encountered heavy gunfire near Wajiroko in Azir Multe, Damboa Local Government Area.
According to the statement, the ambush occurred as the troops, led by Brigadier General M Uba, were concluding routine security operations around vulnerable communities. Despite the sudden attack, the soldiers and accompanying members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, fought back with what officials described as superior firepower.
Two soldiers and two CJTF members were killed during the confrontation.
The Army, however, firmly dismissed circulating reports claiming that the Brigade Commander had been abducted in the attack. The spokesperson urged the public to ignore what she described as fake news, emphasizing that the commander was actively leading the mission and returned safely.
Anele noted that the Army High Command has expressed condolences to the families of the soldiers and CJTF members who lost their lives, praising them as heroes who paid the supreme price while on active service to the nation.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, Nigerian Army Medal, also saluted the troops for their courage and resilience. He described their commitment as a powerful reminder of the daily sacrifices made to safeguard Nigeria.
Sources told Daily Trust that the remains of the two CJTF operatives killed in the ambush were transported to Maiduguri, where they were buried.
