Panic has spread across Gulu, a community in Rimin Gado Local Government Area of Kano State, after a group of armed robbers invaded the town on Thursday night. The attack, which occurred around 8 p.m., has intensified concerns about rising insecurity in rural communities across northern Nigeria.
According to eyewitness accounts, the armed men, estimated to be between four and six, opened fire shortly after entering the area. Their first target was the town’s market, where they reportedly shot into the air to create chaos before advancing toward a nearby shop.
A resident, Hamza Haruna Gulu, told DAILY POST that the gunmen proceeded to the shop of Malam Isa Mai Dusa, where they continued shooting while stealing a significant amount of money.
“Some of them entered the shop, while the others stayed outside. We were terrified. We have not seen something like this before,” he said, describing how the gunshots sent residents running for safety.
Local sources confirmed that the attack caused widespread fear across the community, with many people barricading themselves indoors throughout the night.
Residents expressed frustration over the absence of security personnel during and immediately after the attack. Haruna noted that officers did not appear in the area until Friday morning, long after the armed robbers had escaped.
He also recalled that Gulu once had a functional police station nearly 30 years ago, but it was closed and never restored. The community has repeatedly appealed for its reestablishment to curb rising insecurity.
Following the incident, residents are urging the Kano State Government and security agencies to strengthen policing in rural areas. They fear that without a visible security presence, similar attacks may become more frequent.
Despite the intensity of the raid, no lives were lost.
The attack adds to a growing list of armed robbery and banditry incidents reported across northern Nigeria in recent months. Security experts argue that communities without police outposts are increasingly vulnerable, making urgent intervention necessary.
As insecurity continues to escalate, the question remains. Will authorities take swift action to protect rural communities like Gulu before another attack occurs?
