The Abia State government has paid more than N20 million in compensation to victims of a billboard collapse in Aba on May 28, 2025.
The incident, which involved a privately owned billboard near Salad Market, resulted in the death of a cyclist and injuries to several tricyclists and shop owners in the area.
The payments were made to nine individuals through the Abia State Signage and Advertising Agency (ABSAA). The widow of the deceased cyclist, Chioma Destiny, received N9.6 million, while five injured tricyclists were each paid N1.6 million. Two shop owners affected by the collapse received N500,000 each.
Speaking during the handing over of the bank cheques at Government House, Umuahia, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Transportation, Obioma Nwaogbe, explained that the government decided to compensate the victims despite the billboard being privately owned.
He added that the state, in collaboration with ABSAA and the billboard owners, had worked out arrangements to help the victims return to normal business activities. "There are five tricycle owners, so each will have N1.6 million. Their old tricycles will be retrieved and handed over to them. The two shop owners will receive N500,000 each. The widow of the deceased, Chioma Destiny, will be given N8 million to help her start a new life or invest in a business," Nwaogbe said.
The widow, Mrs Chioma Destiny, expressed her gratitude to Governor Otti, stating that she plans to invest the money in business and use part of it to educate and train her children.
