A 31-year-old man, Abdullateef Seriki-Sanma, has died after jumping into a domestic well in the early hours of Sunday in Ilorin, Kwara State. Family members said he had been struggling with unusual behaviour in the days leading up to the incident.
The tragedy occurred at Bolarinwa Compound in the Centre Igboro area of Ilorin, where Abdullateef, the only surviving child of Madam Idiah’s three children, was said to have jumped into the well around 4:00 a.m.
A family source, who asked not to be named, told reporters that Abdullateef had been acting strangely since the previous week. Concerned relatives had taken turns watching over him, with his mother’s younger sister even staying overnight to ensure he was not left alone.
Another family member said Abdullateef had recently suffered financial setbacks and might have begun using unfamiliar substances. According to him, the family became alarmed when they realised he had carried out the act, prompting them to throw in ladders and ropes in an attempt to rescue him. They received no response.
When their efforts failed, the family contacted the Kwara State Fire Service for assistance.
Fire Service spokesman Hassan Adekunle confirmed the incident, stating that the rescue team received a distress call at 4:33 a.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered that Abdullateef had already died.
Adekunle said preliminary findings indicated that the deceased had reportedly made attempts the previous day, expressing intentions of harming himself. He carried out the final act while other occupants were asleep, leaving no one available to intervene.
