22-Year-Old Woman Dies After Collapsing at Workplace in Umuahia

A tragedy struck in Umuahia on Wednesday night, November 6, 2025, as a 22-year-old woman, Christiana Innocent, reportedly collapsed at her workplace and later died, leaving her family and community devastated.

According to a report by MC Mallam Ji of 104.1 FM Vision Africa Radio, Christiana slumped while on duty at an event centre in Umuahia. Disturbingly, she allegedly received no immediate medical attention, prompting questions about the management’s handling of the situation.

Her mother, Mrs. Chidinma Uwalaka, who lost her husband 15 years ago, recounted the heartbreaking ordeal. She said her daughter had only mentioned a mild stomach ulcer and had not shown any serious symptoms prior to the incident.

“I spoke with her yesterday afternoon, and she said she was fine,” Mrs. Uwalaka said, her voice heavy with grief. “But early this morning around 7 a.m., the chef at her workplace called to say my daughter fell down last night. I asked, ‘Since last night, couldn’t you rush her to the hospital?’ They just kept quiet. It is hard to understand why nobody acted to save her life.”

According to the family, the management of the event centre only contacted them hours later to come and retrieve Christiana’s body, raising further concerns about negligence. Her elder brother, Onyemaechi David Innocent, immediately rushed her to Our Ladies Hospital, Olokoro, where doctors confirmed she was already dead on arrival.

“They said she was sick all through the night, but nobody helped her. They did not take her to the hospital. Even when they called us, nobody followed up to try and save her. They just waited until she died,” Mrs. Uwalaka lamented.

Family members described Christiana as a hardworking, humble, and God-fearing young woman. She had only been employed at the company for two months, yet she had quickly earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues.

“My daughter went to work healthy. She had dreams, she had a future, and she did not deserve to die like this,” Mrs. Uwalaka added, fighting back tears.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage among residents, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death and the responsibilities of her employers.
