16 AFUED Prospective Corps Members Die in Tragic Crash on Their Way to Gombe NYSC Camp

A sombre cloud has settled over Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, following the death of sixteen prospective corps members who lost their lives in a tragic road accident while travelling to the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Gombe State. Two other students from the institution survived the crash but remain in critical condition.

According to reports, the victims were travelling in an 18 seater bus that had been chartered for the long journey to the northern state when the crash occurred. The impact was severe, leaving little chance of survival for most of the passengers. The dreams of the young Nigerians, who had completed their academic programmes and were preparing to begin their compulsory national service, were cut short instantly.

Emergency response teams arrived at the scene to recover the bodies and rescue the injured. The survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel are working to stabilize their condition.

Authorities have not released an official statement on the cause of the crash. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether driver fatigue, speeding, poor road conditions, or mechanical failure may have contributed to the incident.

The tragedy has thrown the university community into deep mourning. Students, lecturers, alumni, and families of the victims have expressed shock and grief. Prayer sessions and vigils have reportedly begun on campus as people struggle to come to terms with the loss.

The accident has renewed national debate about the safety of long distance travel for prospective corps members. Nigerians, including civil society groups and public commentators, are calling on the federal government to implement stricter road safety measures. Many are also urging a review of the current NYSC mobilization system, which often requires graduates to embark on long journeys across the country.

A public condolence message widely shared online includes an appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to intervene and consider temporarily suspending NYSC mobilization until safer and more coordinated transport arrangements are introduced.

As the nation mourns, families of the deceased await further updates from authorities, while the injured continue to receive medical attention. The tragedy has raised serious concerns about road safety, emergency response preparedness, and the protection of young Nigerians embarking on national service.
