Nigerian singer and global Afro-pop sensation Yemi Alade has opened up about a personal experience with aging and self-awareness, revealing that she once lost track of her real age because she was completely immersed in her music career.
The award-winning artist made the revelation during a candid conversation with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where she reflected on how deeply her passion for music consumed her early years.
According to Alade, she was so focused on her work that she lived in a state of timelessness — unaware of how quickly the years were passing.
“I kept saying I was 22 for three years, and when I realized I was 25, I took out my phone and did the math. I was depressed for a few days,” she said.
The “Johnny” crooner explained that her intense focus on music and isolation from everyday routines made it difficult for her to notice time slipping by.
“My mind wasn’t taking into account that years were passing by. I was so invested in my own world and focusing only on music. Every now and then, I’d travel to see my mom, but it was mental — for three years I didn’t know my right age because I was lost in the source. When that dawned on me, I was short of words… I cried,” she added.
