A woman has taken to social media to express deep regret over the gender-affirming care she received after identifying as transgender in her younger years.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the woman shared that she began identifying as male at age 18 and continued living as a man until age 25. During that period, she regularly bound her chest to appear more masculine and eventually underwent double mastectomy surgery eight years ago to remove her breasts.
Now, years later, she says she regrets her decision and the medical procedures that followed.
She wrote:
“I can never get back what I have lost from going down the path of medicalisation.
Gender-affirming care didn’t save my life. It ruined it.”
Her statement has since gone viral, sparking renewed debate online about the ethics of early medical transition and whether young people should be given access to irreversible gender-affirming procedures.
While some social media users expressed empathy and supported her for speaking out, others emphasized that her experience does not represent everyone who undergoes transition, stressing the importance of mental health support and informed medical decisions for those seeking gender-affirming care.
