A woman has taken to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express deep regret over the “gender-affirming care” she received when she identified as transgender.
The woman revealed that between the ages of 18 and 25, she bound her breasts in an effort to appear male and eventually underwent a double mastectomy eight years ago to remove them permanently.
Now, years later, she says she regrets those decisions.
“I can never get back what I have lost from going down the path of medicalisation,” she wrote on X.
“Gender-affirming care didn’t save my life. It ruined it.”
Her post has since gone viral, sparking renewed debate online about the ethics and long-term effects of gender-affirming surgeries and treatments, especially for young people who may later regret transitioning.
The discussion has drawn mixed reactions — while some social media users expressed sympathy for her experience, others defended access to gender-affirming care, arguing that it remains life-saving for many transgender individuals.
