In a rather unusual turn of events, a Nigerian woman, Zainab Alhassan, has divorced her husband, Tijjani Muhammad, after he allegedly refused to repair her damaged mobile phone valued at ₦70,000.
The case was brought before a Shari’a Court on Tuesday, where Zainab expressed her decision to end the marriage through Khul’i a form of Islamic divorce that allows a woman to leave her husband in exchange for returning her dowry.
According to Zainab, she was watching a movie on her phone when her husband became upset, seized the device, and smashed it in anger. She told the court that despite repeated pleas, Tijjani refused to repair the phone, prompting her decision to seek a divorce.
“I am no longer interested in the marriage. I want my freedom, and I am ready to refund the ₦30,000 dowry I received,” Zainab told the court.
However, she admitted that she had no witness to support her claim regarding the phone incident.
In response, Tijjani said he had no objection to the divorce, but firmly denied breaking his wife’s phone.
After hearing from both parties, the presiding judge, Mu’awiyya Shehu, granted the divorce based on Khul’i and dismissed Zainab’s request for her husband to fix the phone, stating that the claim lacked sufficient evidence.
