The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Yoruba actress Iya Ile Okan.
The heartbreaking news was announced by popular actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. Taking to his Instagram page, Afod expressed sadness over her passing, writing:
“We finally lost her. May her perfect soul continue to rest in peace. Iya Ile Okan. It’s a final wrap.”
The actress’s demise comes barely two months after Afod visited her at her home in Ogun State, where she opened up about her struggles with ill health and the financial burden of medical treatment. During that visit, Afod shared a video calling for prayers and support for the ailing actress, saying, “Iya Ile Okan really needs God’s intervention.”
Iya Ile Okan was loved for her motherly roles and captivating performances in Yoruba movies during her active years. Her contributions helped shape the early days of the industry, earning her respect among both colleagues and fans.
Kunle Afod, known for his efforts in reaching out to aged Nollywood stars, revealed that he had been supporting many veterans privately for years. However, after turning 50, he decided to make his charity efforts public not for fame, but to encourage others to care for the industry’s pioneers.
“People kept saying actors only spend money on parties and ignore our legends. That made me realize we needed to show more love publicly,” Afod explained in a previous interview.
Following the announcement of Iya Ile Okan’s death, tributes have poured in from fans and fellow actors who praised her dedication, humility, and impact on Yoruba cinema.
Her passing adds to the growing list of veteran entertainers who have recently died, reigniting conversations about the welfare of aging actors in the Nigerian film industry.
May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace, and may her legacy continue to live on through the works she left behind.
