Tragedy struck in the early hours of Tuesday in the Osisioma area of Aba, Abia State, when a speeding Toyota Camry veered off the road and plunged into a deep, waterlogged gutter, claiming the lives of two young men.
According to reports, the fatal crash occurred around 1:00 a.m., when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while driving at high speed. The car skidded off the road and crashed into the drainage, trapping both occupants inside as the vehicle became submerged.
Eyewitnesses said efforts to rescue the victims proved unsuccessful as they were already dead by the time help arrived.
Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abia State, Ngozi Ezeoma, said the accident was reported to the agency’s office in the early hours of the morning.
“The crash was reported around 1:00 a.m. FRSC officers arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies of the two male victims who were trapped inside the vehicle,” Ezeoma said.
“Their remains have been deposited in the mortuary, and the vehicle a Toyota Camry was recovered from the ditch with the help of a crane.”
She confirmed that preliminary investigations indicated that excessive speed was the main cause of the crash, leading the driver to lose control of the car.
Residents of Osisioma were seen mourning at the scene later in the morning as the bodies were pulled from the water and taken away by authorities.
The FRSC Commander once again urged motorists to observe speed limits, especially at night, and to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any journey.
