A heartbreaking tragedy has struck in Akure, Ondo State, after a nursing mother reportedly collapsed and died while breastfeeding her baby.
The sad incident occurred in the Oke Aro area of Akure, near the Dele Bread axis. According to eyewitnesses, the woman said to be a yam seller was in good spirits earlier in the morning, exchanging greetings with neighbours before sitting down to feed her child.
Moments later, she reportedly began to complain of weakness and tiredness. In an attempt to regain her strength, she drank a bottle of Coca-Cola, but tragically collapsed and died on the spot.
“She was just talking to us a few minutes before,” an eyewitness told The Hope Newspaper. “She said she was feeling weak and took Coke to get energy, but she suddenly slumped.”
Neighbours quickly rushed her to a nearby hospital, but medical staff confirmed she was brought in dead.
Some residents who spoke at the scene suggested her death might have been linked to malnutrition or exhaustion, as she was believed not to have been feeding properly in recent days.
Her husband, a commercial driver, was reportedly away for work when the incident happened and had not returned home as of the time the news broke.
Sympathisers have continued to troop to the family’s residence, describing the late woman as calm, friendly, and hardworking. Many expressed shock at her sudden death and concern for the welfare of her baby, who was still in her arms when the tragedy occurred.
