A tragic road accident in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State has claimed the life of a pregnant woman and left four others injured, following a collision involving a payloader vehicle, a Toyota Camry, and a commercial tricycle.
The fatal crash occurred around 9 a.m. on Thursday along Akarigbo Road, marking the third major road accident reported in Ogun State within a week.
According to eyewitnesses, the unregistered payloader reportedly lost control while in motion, veered off its lane, and rammed into oncoming vehicles. One of the witnesses, John Olakunle, recounted the harrowing moment:
“One pregnant woman was in the tricycle that was crushed, and she is feared dead at the moment,” he said.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) confirmed the incident, identifying the vehicles involved as a Toyota Camry with registration number AAB-248 MK and a commercial tricycle with plate number JGB-643 VD.
TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed that five persons were involved in the crash four adult males and one adult female. The pregnant woman, who was in the tricycle, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the four male victims sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“The impact of the collision was severe,” Akinbiyi said. “The woman in the tricycle died instantly, while the others were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.”
Eyewitnesses and passersby quickly mobilized to rescue the victims, transporting the injured to different medical facilities in Sagamu for urgent attention. The remains of the deceased woman have been deposited in a morgue as investigations continue into the exact cause of the crash.
Authorities have since appealed to motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to exercise extreme caution on major roads, stressing that reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance remain leading causes of such preventable tragedies across the state.
