Tragedy as Newly Sworn-In Lawyer, Barrister Temi Odu, Reportedly Strangled to Death by Her Husband

A wave of grief and outrage has swept through Nigeria’s legal community and social media following reports that a newly sworn-in lawyer, Barrister Temi Odu, was allegedly strangled to death by her husband, Mr. Christopher Odu, in a shocking case of suspected domestic violence.

The heartbreaking incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, with disturbing details emerging online through a series of Instagram posts shared by user @Toniabruisebutnotbroken, a known advocate against gender-based violence.

According to the posts, Barrister Temi Odu, who had only recently been called to the Nigerian Bar during the 2025 Call to Bar ceremony in Abuja, was killed by her husband during a violent altercation in the presence of their young son.

Despite the gravity of the alleged crime, reports claim that Mr. Odu was released from police custody, sparking widespread anger and calls for justice across social media platforms.

“He strangled her to death in front of their son. Yet, he’s walking free. This is not justice  this is failure,” one post read.

Further allegations suggest that the suspect is attempting to bury the deceased in haste, without the consent of her family. The victim’s relatives have reportedly raised alarm over the situation, demanding that authorities halt the burial and ensure that a proper investigation is carried out.

The same social media account also alleged that Mr. Odu had a long history of domestic abuse, claiming that he had subjected his wife to over two decades of physical and emotional violence, which reportedly began during their courtship.

“She endured years of abuse in silence — as many women do — until it finally took her life,” the post stated.

Before her tragic death, Barrister Temi Odu was described as a hardworking and determined woman who supported her entire family financially. Reports indicate that she was the sole breadwinner, had built their family home, and was raising their three sons with dedication and strength.

Her death has reignited national conversations about domestic violence, femicide, and the failure of the justice system to protect victims of abuse.

Several online users and advocacy groups have called for the immediate rearrest and prosecution of Christopher Odu, condemning what they describe as “a pattern of impunity” in cases involving gender-based violence.

“This is more than just a tragedy — it’s a reflection of how deeply broken our system is when it comes to protecting women,” one activist wrote.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the Nigerian Police Force or relevant authorities regarding the alleged release of the suspect or the ongoing investigation.
