Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has opened up about nearly turning down the chance to feature on Mavin Records’ iconic hit, “Dorobucci,” after initially dismissing the track as unimpressive.
In a recent interview with NotJustOk, the award-winning singer revealed that when Don Jazzy, Mavin Records’ founder, first played the song for her during her wedding trip to Dubai, she thought it sounded “crappy.”
“Don’t know if people know this, but Dorobucci — I had Don Jazzy playing that in the hotel when we were in Dubai for my wedding, and I didn’t want to tell him, but I thought it was such a crap song,” Tiwa recalled.
She explained that Don Jazzy played the beat repeatedly during the trip, though she didn’t realise he was working on a major collaboration for the Mavin collective.
After her wedding, the producer insisted she return to Nigeria instead of proceeding with her honeymoon, telling her there was an important song to record.
“He said, ‘Eh, there’s one record, you have to come back to Nigeria,’” Tiwa recounted.
Upon hearing the finished track in the studio, Tiwa said she was both shocked and slightly annoyed because she hadn’t expected much from it.
“I got back to Nigeria and heard the full song, and I was flabbergasted. I was so angry because this had happened with Eminado too — I didn’t like that one at first either,” she admitted.
The singer added that she was the last artist to record her verse on Dorobucci, still unsure about the song’s potential.
“I was just looking at everybody in the studio like, ‘Do you guys really like this?’ But everyone had already recorded their parts, so I just did mine last,” she said.
Despite her initial doubts, Dorobucci went on to become one of the biggest Afrobeats hits of the 2010s, solidifying Mavin Records’ dominance in Nigerian music.
“We all know what happened to the record. I don’t know what Don Jazzy does, but it turned out phenomenal. Shout out to Don Jazzy,” Tiwa concluded.
