The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security, Hon. Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, has revealed that terrorists have issued direct threats to bomb the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Speaking on Tuesday during a public hearing on a bill proposing the establishment of a Legislative Security Directorate, Hon. Garba said the legislature has received “credible threats” not only from terrorists but also from protesters threatening to lock up the National Assembly.
“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly,” he stated.
The lawmaker warned that the increasing security breaches including car and motorcycle theft, vandalism, infiltration by unregistered visitors, and the use of fake ID cards pose serious risks to the safety of lawmakers, staff, and visitors.
He cautioned that any failure to strengthen security around the National Assembly could disrupt Nigeria’s legislative process, paralyzing key national functions such as representation, budgeting, and oversight.
“If proper measures are not taken, legislative activities could be truncated and that would destabilize democracy and governance,” Garba warned.
The proposed bill, titled
“A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Establishment and Functions of the Legislative Security Directorate in the National Assembly (HB 1632),”
seeks to create a dedicated body responsible for security coordination, threat management, and access control within the National Assembly.
While emphasizing that Parliament must remain open and accessible to the public, Garba stressed that security must not be compromised in the name of openness.
He also encouraged state Houses of Assembly across Nigeria to adopt similar frameworks to improve security at the subnational level.
