Police in Mahikeng, North West Province, South Africa, are investigating a disturbing case in which a 25-year-old man allegedly killed his 48-year-old mother with a shovel before being shot dead by a neighbor who tried to stop the attack.
According to reports from SABC News and eNCA, the gruesome incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, October 5, 2025, at the family’s home in Mosiane View village, Mahikeng.
Eyewitnesses said the suspect launched a violent attack on his mother using a garden shovel, striking her repeatedly—even after she appeared to have died.
A neighbor who heard the commotion rushed to the scene and found the young man still assaulting his mother’s body. In an attempt to stop the assault, the neighbor shot the attacker, killing him instantly.
Police arrived shortly afterward and discovered both bodies at the scene. Authorities have since opened a murder investigation into the woman’s death, while the neighbor has been taken in for questioning.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed the incident, describing it as “deeply disturbing and tragic.” He added that the Occult-Related Crimes Unit has been called in to assist with the investigation due to the nature of the attack.
The motive behind the son’s brutal assault remains unclear, but investigations are ongoing.
