The Presidency has refuted claims that President Bola Tinubu is planning to replace the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, following reports of his sudden illness.
In a statement on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, clarified that the 69-year-old minister recently fell ill but is recuperating at his Abuja residence and receiving proper medical attention in Nigeria.
“Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around,” Onanuga stated.
The clarification came after growing speculation that Edun had suffered a stroke and was flown abroad for treatment rumours the presidency strongly dismissed as false and misleading.
The statement also follows reports suggesting that President Tinubu might be considering a replacement after it was confirmed that Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso would lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., scheduled to begin Monday, October 14.
Edun, who was appointed on August 28, 2023, has been a central figure in the Tinubu administration’s economic reform agenda. His leadership has focused on stabilising the naira, curbing inflation, boosting fiscal discipline, and attracting foreign investment into the Nigerian economy.
Since taking office, the finance minister has played a key role in shaping government policies aimed at addressing Nigeria’s pressing economic challenges, including the removal of fuel subsidies and efforts to enhance non-oil revenue generation.
As of Sunday evening, the Presidency maintained that there is no plan to replace Wale Edun, assuring Nigerians that he is recovering well and remains committed to his duties once he regains full strength.
