Tension is rising in Ugbema community, located in Benue State, after a heartbreaking incident involving a heavily pregnant widow who was reportedly banished from the area following accusations of shoplifting.
According to eyewitness accounts, the woman, whose name has not been made public for her safety, recently lost her husband and has since been struggling to survive with her young son while expecting another child.
Residents say she had been living in deep poverty and reportedly resorted to taking small household items including food, soap, and toiletries from local shops to feed herself and her child.
Her troubles began early on Saturday morning, when she was caught by some youths who accused her of theft. Instead of handing her over to the police or community leaders for a fair hearing, they paraded her publicly around the market square, subjecting her to humiliation under the scorching sun.
Community witnesses described a distressing scene, saying the woman wept uncontrollably as people gathered around, some taunting and recording her with their phones.
Later that day, reports say the community elders held a meeting and decided that the woman should be banished from Ugbema as punishment for her alleged theft. The youths were then instructed to escort her out of the community boundaries despite her pregnancy and fragile state.
The action has since sparked outrage within and beyond the community. Many residents, human rights advocates, and social media users have condemned the treatment, calling it inhumane, degrading, and unjust.
“This is a woman in pain and poverty, not a criminal,” said a concerned resident. “What she needed was compassion and help not public humiliation and banishment.”
Activists have pointed to the incident as a painful reflection of systemic poverty, social neglect, and the lack of welfare support in rural parts of Nigeria. They argue that the woman’s alleged theft was a symptom of desperation, not moral failure.
Human rights groups are now calling on the Benue State Government, social welfare departments, and women’s advocacy organizations to urgently locate the woman, provide her with medical attention, food, and shelter, and investigate the community’s actions.
Observers have also criticized the absence of structured support systems for widows, who are often left to fend for themselves after the death of their spouses especially in rural communities where cultural stigma and economic hardship combine to worsen their plight.
The case has ignited wider public discourse on the treatment of vulnerable women, the need for mental health and social welfare intervention, and the growing calls for compassionate justice over mob-style punishment.
As of the time of this report, local authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident or the woman’s current whereabouts.
