Nigerian singer Omawumi Megbele, popularly known as Omawumi, has opened up about how ace producer and singer Cobhams Asuquo played a pivotal role in shaping her music career.
Speaking during an interview on Hip TV, the “Bottom Belle” crooner recounted how a simple phone call from Cobhams turned out to be one of the biggest turning points in her career.
According to her, Cobhams reached out unexpectedly and invited her to record a song with him.
“The first time we met, he just called. I knew we met on the show, and he said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo — you know he likes to funkify his name. There is a song I want you to do. It might not come out as anything for now, but let’s just go with it,’” she shared.
She went on to record the song, unaware that it would later become a major breakthrough.
“I did the song, and then the agency picked it. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years. Cobhams taught me a lot of nuances when it comes to delivery and posture,” she added.
Omawumi, who first gained national recognition as the runner-up on Idols West Africa in 2007, credited Cobhams for being one of the few people who believed in her potential early on.
She revealed that their collaboration not only brought her endorsement deals but also opened doors to more musical projects and recognition.
Cobhams Asuquo — renowned for his work with Asa, Timi Dakolo, Waje, and Banky W — has produced several of Omawumi’s hit songs and remains a respected figure in Nigerian music production.
