It was a somber and emotional day in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, as family members, colleagues, and dignitaries gathered to bid farewell to Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, the young and talented ARISE News anchor whose life was tragically cut short.
The 29-year-old journalist, affectionately known as “Sommie”, was laid to rest on Saturday in her father’s compound after a funeral Mass at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Agulu.
Among the mourners were Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, members of the media, public figures, and well-wishers who came from across the country to pay their final respects.
The burial ceremony began in the late morning and reached its emotional peak around 1:30 p.m., as family and friends watched the lowering of her casket amid tears and prayers.
Sommie’s death on September 29, 2025, sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s media industry. She was killed following a violent armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
According to police reports, a gang of about 15 robbers stormed the three-storey building where she lived around 2:30 a.m. The attackers reportedly shot one of the security guards and tied up others. In a desperate attempt to flee, Sommie who lived on the top floor jumped from the third storey, sustaining fatal head injuries.
She was rushed to a hospital but sadly did not survive.
The Nigeria Police Force has since arrested 12 suspects in connection with the incident and recovered weapons and stolen items. Investigations are still ongoing.
During the burial Mass, Rev. Fr. Peter Ezewuzie urged the grieving family and friends to find solace in faith, reminding them that “the maturity of life is not in its duration but in its quality.”
“The Lord who created us knows the beginning from the end,” he said. “Some of you may be unhappy that a life was cut short, but God’s plan is perfect. He loves Christelle more than we do. The only thing you owe her is to continue to remember her in your prayers.”
His message brought quiet reflection to the crowd, as many wiped away tears while recalling Sommie’s gentle spirit and bright career.
In his tribute, Peter Obi described Sommie’s death as “a painful loss,” urging the family to take comfort in faith.
“We cannot question God. When I heard of her death, I didn’t even know she was from Agulu until after I tweeted about it,” he said. “This loss is a huge one, but our coming here is to console the family. It is the wish of God, and we must accept it.”
The former Anambra governor also revealed that he cut short his foreign trip to attend the burial.
“Before I left Birmingham yesterday, I told those with me that I was rushing back to Nigeria for the burial of one of my daughters. I asked them to remember her in their prayers,” he added solemnly.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Obi Maduagwu, Sommie’s uncle, expressed deep gratitude to the management of ARISE News for their unwavering support since the tragedy occurred.
“We thank the management of ARISE News. They have been with us right from the beginning. We also appreciate everyone who journeyed from far and near to be with us,” he said.
Friends, parishioners, and colleagues at ARISE News described Sommie as a bright, passionate, and deeply compassionate journalist who loved her work and touched lives through her storytelling.
As the coffin was lowered into the earth, mourners wept openly, struggling to accept the painful reality of a life full of promise abruptly ended. Yet amid the tears, there was gratitude for the light she brought into the lives of those who knew her.
“The maturity of life,” one mourner whispered, “is not how long we live, but how well we live and Sommie lived beautifully.”
