Authorities in North Carolina have charged a 25-year-old man after he allegedly removed an IV from his arm and sprayed his own HIV-positive blood at hospital employees during an incident earlier this year.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by Law&Crime, the suspect, Kameron Gilchrist, was being treated for diabetes at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh on March 21, 2025, when the shocking incident occurred.
Investigators say Gilchrist allegedly pulled out his intravenous line and began spraying blood toward two hospital staff members, deliberately aiming for their eyes. The warrant specifically states that Gilchrist “removed his IV from his arm and began spraying his HIV-positive blood at the victims’ eyes.”
It is unclear whether either of the two medical personnel involved contracted HIV as a result of the assault.
Due to his ongoing medical and psychiatric treatment, Gilchrist was not immediately taken into custody after the incident. However, after several months, authorities formally charged him in September 2025 with two counts of assaulting emergency personnel.
Local outlet WRAL reported that the case highlights the dangers healthcare workers sometimes face, even when trying to provide care to patients in distress.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not released further details regarding Gilchrist’s current health status or the condition of the hospital employees involved.
