Ngozi Nwosu: “I picked a pestle and I was ready to kill him” — actress recalls final violent episode that made her leave marriage
Veteran Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu has recounted the violent confrontation with her then-husband that convinced her to end the marriage, telling Ayo Adesanya on Ayo Adesanya TV that the incident left her fearing for her life.
Nwosu said the fight began during an argument when her husband grabbed and dragged her by the hair. She described how a Bob Marley–style braid was torn out during the scuffle, causing her to bleed. In a moment of fury and desperation she ran to the kitchen, grabbed a pestle and threw it at him — the object pierced a door after he dodged it.
“I said, ‘Ngozi, enough is enough — if not this man will kill me,’” she said. “Honestly, I will not lie, I didn't know where I got the strength from. I just picked a pestle and I was ready to kill him that day and I didn't mind going to jail.”
Nwosu told the interviewer the episode was the decisive turning point that made her leave the marriage to preserve her safety. She said she will never forget the day and framed the event as the moment she realised staying would put her life at risk.
Her testimony adds a personal voice to ongoing conversations in Nigeria about domestic violence, the warning signs victims face and the difficult, often dangerous choices required to exit abusive relationships.
