Authorities in the Philippines have launched an investigation after a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a cardboard box along a roadside in Tuguegarao City.
The baby was discovered around 6:50 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, by a passerby, who immediately raised the alarm. Disturbing video footage showed the infant moving inside the box, which had been left on a roadside wall.
Police confirmed that the child appeared to be just hours old, with her umbilical cord already cut. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her in stable condition. Medical officials say she will remain under observation for up to five days to ensure her health.
May Asuncion, a social worker with the City Social Welfare and Development Office, confirmed that the baby was “doing well and responding to care.”
Chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. praised the swift action of local citizens and authorities.
“This rescue reflects the sense of care and responsibility that President Marcos expects from our law enforcement officers. Every life is valuable, and the PNP will not rest until we identify the individual who abandoned this child,” he said in a statement.
Police have urged anyone with information about the baby’s parents or those responsible for her abandonment to come forward, stressing that the case remains under active investigation.
The case comes just a day after another disturbing incident in India, where a baby boy was discovered abandoned in Bhilwara district, Rajasthan.
The infant, believed to be between 15 and 20 days old, was found among rocks and rubbish with a stone shoved in his mouth and his lips glued shut to prevent him from crying.
Shocking footage showed villagers removing the stone, after which the baby immediately began crying. The child was rushed to Bijolia Government Hospital for urgent medical care, where doctors confirmed that adhesive had also been applied to his thighs.
Police believe the cruel measures were intended to silence the baby and prevent his cries from drawing attention. Investigators are now reviewing delivery records from local hospitals in an attempt to identify his mother.
Both cases have drawn widespread outrage, with child rights advocates stressing the urgent need for stronger protective measures, better awareness of safe-haven laws, and community vigilance to prevent the abandonment and abuse of vulnerable infants.
