In a sweeping federal operation, more than 30 people including NBA players, a head coach, and alleged organized-crime associates have been arrested across multiple states in connection with a sprawling illegal gambling and sports-betting investigation.
The arrests, announced on Thursday, October 23, 2025, stem from two related probes into illicit gambling activities that allegedly involved both current and former professional basketball figures, according to law-enforcement officials cited by Reuters and CBS News.
Among those arrested are Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, and former NBA player Damon Jones. Authorities say the cases involve separate operations that together generated tens of millions of dollars through insider betting and underground poker games backed by organized-crime groups.
According to investigators, one case centers on illegal sports-betting activities, where certain players allegedly leaked confidential information including injury reports and player availability to bettors who profited from the data.
In the other case, prosecutors say Billups and several others participated in a high-stakes underground poker network with ties to Mafia families. That operation allegedly used rigged games and concealed earnings through shell companies.
Federal agents executed coordinated raids in Florida, Oregon, New York, and Nevada, seizing cash, betting records, and electronic devices.
The NBA has confirmed it is cooperating fully with federal authorities.
“The league was not a party to or complicit in any of the alleged conduct,” a spokesperson said, emphasizing that “sportsbooks and the NBA itself are considered victims in the case.”
As of Thursday afternoon, court appearances were scheduled in Miami and Portland. Legal experts expect federal prosecutors to release formal indictments within days.
This marks one of the largest gambling-related scandals in U.S. sports since the 1919 Black Sox case, underscoring renewed concerns about the relationship between professional sports and betting enterprises.
