The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has opened up about one of the most difficult moments of her motherhood admitting she was “not well” after spending an extended period away from her children, Archie and Lilibet.
The emotional confession came during the second season of her Netflix docuseries, With Love, Meghan, which premiered earlier this year and features an array of celebrity guests including Chrissy Teigen, Tan France, and renowned chefs David Chang, Samin Nosrat, Christina Tosi, and Clare Smyth.
In a heartfelt exchange with Queer Eye star Tan France, who spoke about missing his own young children, Meghan shared how she struggled during a particularly long separation from her kids.
“Oh, I know,” Meghan responded empathetically. “The longest I went without being around our kids was almost three weeks,” she said, pausing before adding softly, “I was… not well.”
Though Meghan did not specify when the separation occurred, it is believed to have taken place in September 2022, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were unexpectedly in the UK for royal events.
At the time, the couple had travelled from California to attend the One Young World Summit in Manchester and an Invictus Games event in Germany. Their stay in the UK was extended after the Queen’s passing on September 8, 2022, during which they attended several public events alongside Prince William and Princess Catherine despite ongoing tensions within the royal family.
Prince Harry previously reflected on this emotional period in his memoir Spare, recalling how he and Meghan were apart from their children “longer than we’d ever been.” Upon reuniting in California, he wrote, the couple spent “days and days hugging the children, unable to let them out of our sight.”
Archie and Lilibet were reportedly cared for by Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, at the time.
Meanwhile, Meghan also made headlines this week after comparing her and Harry’s creative partnership with Netflix to that of Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground.
Speaking at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, D.C., the Duchess said:
“My husband and I were in an overall deal with Netflix, and then not just similar to Higher Ground in the Obamas’ deal once that had come to its term, the extension of it, which was such an incredible sign of the strength of our partnership, was now being in a first-look deal.”
She added that the arrangement allows them flexibility to explore projects beyond Netflix when appropriate signaling a new creative phase for the Sussexes.
