A tragic scene unfolded in Tirana, the capital of Albania, on Monday when a man on trial opened fire inside a courtroom, killing the presiding judge and injuring two others, according to police reports.
Authorities confirmed that Appeals Court Judge Astrit Kalaja was overseeing the case when the defendant suddenly drew a firearm and shot him multiple times at close range. Police said the suspect was immediately apprehended by security forces at the scene.
“The judge was rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries on the way,” police said in an official statement.
Two other men a father and son who were involved in the same trial were also hit by gunfire and transported to the hospital. Doctors later reported that both were in stable condition and expected to recover.
Local media outlets reported that the shooting stemmed from a property dispute, and that the gunman allegedly opened fire after realizing he was about to lose the case. The incident sent shockwaves through Albania’s legal community, sparking urgent questions about courtroom security and the safety of judicial officials.
Police quickly cordoned off the courthouse and launched a full investigation into how the armed man was able to bring a firearm into the courtroom, despite standard security checks.
Judge Kalaja, a respected member of the judiciary, had served in Albania’s Appeals Court for several years and was known for his professionalism and integrity. His death has prompted widespread condemnation from government officials, legal associations, and human rights organizations across the country.
Albania’s Minister of Justice expressed “deep sorrow and outrage” over the killing, calling it “an attack on the entire justice system.”
The suspect remains in custody as authorities continue to investigate the motive, security lapses, and the weapon used in the attack.
