There was panic in the Iyana Isashi area of Ojo Local Government, Lagos State, on Friday after a man identified simply as Alex, also known in the community as Fleximore, was shot by suspected gunmen.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8 pm. Alex, who lived in Cele Niza, had just returned home from work before stepping out again to meet a friend when he was attacked.
According to eyewitnesses, two men on a motorcycle accosted him on the road. One of the assailants allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot him at close range before fleeing with his accomplice.
A resident who did not want his name mentioned said:
“It was the sound of the gunshot that drew people to the scene. We found him lying in a pool of blood while the attackers sped away on the motorcycle. He was rushed to the hospital immediately, and doctors tried to save him, but he was in a coma.”
Alex remained in critical condition for several days before eventually succumbing to the gunshot wound on Wednesday morning.
Community members believe the attack may have been connected to an altercation Alex reportedly had at a nightclub in the area a day before the shooting.
A resident, who identified himself as Quadri, told reporters:
“Some of his friends who were at the club with him said he had a serious fight with some guys there. It started with an argument and later became a physical confrontation. That was very unusual of him, because Alex was an easy-going person who hardly got into trouble. We don’t know who those men were, but many people think the shooting was linked to that incident.”
When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said she was not yet fully briefed on the case.
“I am not aware of the incident, but I will call the Divisional Police Officer in the area to confirm,” she said.
The police are expected to begin investigations into the killing, though residents have expressed concerns about the frequency of similar attacks in the area.
The Iyana Isashi community, like many parts of Ojo and Iba Local Government Areas, has witnessed a series of violent incidents in recent months, many of them suspected to be cult-related.
In August, PUNCH Metro reported that a passenger was shot dead inside a commercial bus along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway near Okoafo. In that case, too, the attackers were said to have arrived on a motorcycle, fired at close range, and escaped before security agents could respond.
Meanwhile, family members of the late Alex are said to be making arrangements for his burial. Friends and neighbours have described him as a calm, peace-loving man who rarely engaged in disputes.
