Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has finally addressed the growing speculation about a supposed rift between him and the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with BBC Hausa, the former governor of Kano State dismissed reports of a disagreement, describing them as baseless rumours being spread by political mischief-makers.
Kwankwaso maintained that his relationship with Governor Yusuf remains cordial, emphasizing that both of them are united in their commitment to serving the people of Kano State and advancing the principles of the Kwankwasiyya ideology.
“There is no problem between me and Governor Abba. We gave him the opportunity to perform, and he is doing his best. It is just that some mischievous individuals are trying to create division where there is none,” he said.
He explained that Governor Yusuf’s emergence as the NNPP candidate was not by accident, but rather the result of careful consideration, loyalty, and proven capacity.
“We carefully examined the options and found him most qualified as far back as 2019. We gave him the chance to deliver, and we continue to support him,” Kwankwaso added.
The NNPP leader further debunked allegations that he had been interfering in the running of the Kano State government or controlling the award of contracts.
“Those claiming that I control contracts or run the government are only being mischievous. In due time, the truth will come out,” he said firmly.
Kwankwaso’s clarification comes amid persistent rumours that the once-close allies had fallen out over the direction of governance in Kano and internal issues within the NNPP.
Political observers believe the statement was intended to calm tensions within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which has been the dominant political force in Kano for over a decade.
Governor Yusuf, who succeeded Abdullahi Ganduje, has faced significant political challenges, including the legal battles over his election victory and alleged interference from opposition forces.
