A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, October 27, 2025, when a two-storey building collapsed at No. 54, Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, near UBA Bank, Oyingbo, in Lagos State.
According to reports, several occupants were trapped under the rubble as the structure gave way while most residents were asleep.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) confirmed that it received a distress call around 12:20 a.m., and emergency responders from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station arrived at the scene within minutes to begin rescue operations.
In a statement, the LSFRS Director, Margaret Adeseye, said that 15 people comprising seven men, four women, and four children were rescued with varying degrees of injuries.
“All rescued victims have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute Meta and the General Hospital on Lagos Island for medical attention,” she said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the building had earlier been declared structurally unsafe by authorities but was still occupied by tenants.
As of the time of filing this report, rescue operations are still ongoing, with emergency officials searching for additional victims feared trapped beneath the wreckage.
Adeseye added that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in collaboration with other emergency response agencies, remains fully deployed at the scene to ensure all affected individuals are rescued and accounted for.
The incident has once again sparked conversations around building safety and compliance in Lagos, a state that has witnessed multiple building collapses in recent years despite repeated warnings and enforcement efforts by government agencies.
