Tension has gripped Borno State after fighters from the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a deadly attack on a military base in Ngamdu during the early hours of Friday.
According to reports, the insurgents stormed the Ngamdu military camp at about 2 a.m., opening heavy fire on soldiers stationed at the base. The assault reportedly caught the troops off guard, leading to intense gunfire that lasted for several hours.
Sources said several soldiers were killed in the attack, while many others sustained injuries. Ambulances were later seen evacuating the wounded to the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu for urgent medical attention.
In the aftermath of the assault, the military temporarily sealed off the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, one of the busiest routes in the Northeast, causing heavy traffic and leaving many travelers stranded for hours.
Although the full details of the casualties remain unclear, the attack marks another major strike by ISWAP against Nigerian security forces in the region, raising renewed concerns about the group’s growing presence and boldness around Borno and Yobe States.
