“I Sold Cake and Bread in UNILAG” — Actor Deyemi Okanlawon Reflects on His Hustle Before Fame

Deyemi Okanlawon

Before becoming one of Nollywood’s most respected actors, Deyemi Okanlawon once hustled his way through university life by selling baked goods on campus.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the actor revealed that he sold cake and bread while studying at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to make ends meet.

“I was selling cake and bread in UNILAG,” he said proudly, recalling his early days as a struggling student.

Okanlawon shared that those experiences shaped his character and work ethic, teaching him the importance of resilience and humility.

“It wasn’t shameful — it was survival,” he said. “That experience taught me discipline and humility.”

Despite the struggles, Deyemi never gave up on his dream. He participated in student drama productions, balanced his academics, and continued to refine his acting craft.

“I didn’t wait for anyone to discover me. I just kept showing up,” he added.

Today, the actor credits that same determination for fueling his success in Nollywood.

“Every role I play reminds me where I came from,” he reflected.

From selling baked goods to starring in blockbuster movies, Deyemi’s story stands as a powerful reminder that humble beginnings can lead to great destinies.
