A routine morning walk turned into a nightmare for a 26-year-old sushi chef, Wan Lai, who was brutally st@bbed in the chest by a stranger in a shocking and unprovoked attack in Melbourne, Australia.
The incident occurred at around 7:40 a.m. on October 2, 2025, near the intersection of Little Bourke Street and Spencer Street, right in the heart of Melbourne’s busy Central Business District (CBD).
CCTV footage that later circulated online captured the horrifying moment. It shows a woman dressed in dark clothing running toward Ms. Lai from behind. In a split second, the attacker confronts her face-to-face, looks her directly in the eye, and plunges a knife into her chest. The entire scene unfolded in broad daylight, just as people were heading to work.
Startled pedestrians watched in shock as Ms. Lai collapsed to her knees, clutching her chest. Despite her severe injury, she managed to use her phone to call for help while trying to apply pressure to the wound. Good Samaritans nearby rushed to her side, providing first aid until emergency responders arrived.
Paramedics quickly transported her to a nearby hospital, where doctors discovered she had suffered a punctured lung and a hemopneumothorax a serious medical condition where blood and air collect around the lung, making it extremely difficult to breathe.
She remained in the hospital for three days, receiving treatment for her injuries. Fortunately, medical officials confirmed that her wounds were non-life-threatening, though the emotional trauma was severe.
Ms. Lai’s sister, Ivana, spoke to 7News Australia, describing the family’s fear and disbelief.
“She turned to her right this time and there was someone there — but what if she had turned to her left? It could have been her heart,” Ivana said.
“She’s terrified now. She can’t stand people walking behind her, and she keeps looking over her shoulder. She hasn’t been able to return to work since the attack.”
Police launched an immediate city-wide manhunt, using CCTV footage and eyewitness reports to identify the suspect. After hours of searching, investigators arrested a 32-year-old Melbourne woman in connection with the assault.
A spokesperson for the Victoria Police confirmed the arrest, saying:
“Police conducted an extensive search of the area, arrested a woman, and seized a knife. A 32-year-old Melbourne woman was charged with intentionally causing injury and committing an indictable offence while on bail.”
The suspect has since been remanded in custody and is expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in the coming weeks.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the attack, but they have confirmed that the assault was random and unprovoked, with no known connection between the victim and the suspect.
