Authorities in Valdosta, Georgia, have arrested a woman accused of running an unlicensed daycare after her two Rottweilers fatally mauled a 2-year-old boy while she allegedly slept for hours.
The victim, identified as Kaimir Jones, was discovered dead in the backyard of 48-year-old Stacy Wheeler Cobb’s home around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, according to a press release from the Valdosta Police Department (VPD).
Investigators believe the toddler wandered out of the house while Cobb was napping and accidentally unlocked the kennel containing the two large Rottweilers. Police said that Kaimir’s mother had left him in Cobb’s care earlier that day and that he was the only child present at the time of the attack.
Authorities revealed that Cobb’s home had been functioning as an unlicensed daycare, which at times cared for as many as 10 children simultaneously.
In a statement, Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan described the event as “horrible and tragic,” emphasizing that the child’s death could have been prevented.
“This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred, but because of negligence on this offender’s behalf, a mother has tragically lost a child,” Chief Manahan said.
“No words will ever ease their pain, but our hearts go out to them during this unimaginably difficult time. I also keep our first responders in my prayers as they continue processing their response to this tragic scene.”
Police said Cobb admitted she had fallen asleep for more than two hours, believing the child was safe. She has since been charged with second-degree murder and cruelty to children.
The two Rottweilers involved in the attack, along with a third dog found on the property, were handed over to Lowndes County Animal Control.
The victim’s mother, Adrianna Jones, shared her devastation in a post on GoFundMe, writing that her “intuition” had prompted her to leave work early after hours without communication from Cobb.
“This was a heartbreaking, devastating, and traumatizing scene that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I found my baby like this,” she wrote, adding that Cobb had come “highly recommended.”
Local residents and online communities have expressed shock and anger over the tragedy, demanding stricter oversight of unlicensed childcare providers and stronger safety regulations for homes that care for children.
The case remains under investigation by the Valdosta Police Department and Child Protective Services, as authorities work to determine how Cobb’s daycare operated without a valid license.
